I was hesitant at first, but seeing the big price increases of the Hubbell and Bryant 9450 outlets, I decided to give this one a try. In short, this is pretty much identical to the 9450. It has the same size, dimensions, hex clamp, hardened plastic as the 9450. I would not be surprised if this is also a rebadged hubbell 9450. Buy it now before the price will inevitably increase due to demand.

This receptacle was the exact quality that I expected. I read a lot of reviews on nema 14-50 receptacles mainly because I saw a lot of non EV rated types of receptacles being used for electric vehicle charging. These non-EV rated receptacles are not constructed for lengthy charging sessions. What sold me on this one was the full blades inside the sockets and the screw terminals. The terminals are (for lack of a better word) “beefier.” I installed this in my garage using a 40A GFI breaker and have charged about a dozen times since installation. I have not had an issue with it. It works as expected. I would recommend that once it is installed and you are plugged into it that you do not plug and un-plug needlessly. Doing this could weaken the terminals. I consider it a semi-permanent installation.

I have an EV. So far this play works well. Easy to plug and unplug. A little hot, but Not super hot.

It specifically is for EV charging, has the picture of a car on it.

I replaced the heavy duty Hubbell outlet that I bought. It never worked right, ran hot, and was hard to plug and unplug. When I took it out, a loose piece of plastic fell out. Maybe it was defective from the start. But considering the Hubbell is a $100+ part, and heavy duty, I was very disappointed. I splurged to buy the Hubbell based on reviews. But I am very sorry I did.

After hearing so many reports of how much better these are than a standard ten dollar Leviton from 11 years ago, I decided to upgrade. This one is marginally deeper, but still fits in a 2 inch deep box with no trouble. The circumference is bigger so you’ll need a bigger plate. The biggest difference aside from robustness is that this uses a hex wrench to attach the wires, and it can be torqued down tightly with a torque wrench.

When I installed the original one 11 years ago, I realized how hard it was to get proper torque with a flat blade screwdriver. A Philips would slip with that much force. I think that the biggest reason people have trouble with cheaper outlets is improper torquing.

These photos show the differences in dimensions and build, compared to one that was in daily use for 11 years. A properly installed one held up to proper charging after all, but I’d still recommend spending the money on this one to be sure.

Replaced a standard 50 amp receptacle that started to deteriorate from EV usage. Fortunately our Tesla sent us an error message before it failed. This receptacle was definitely more robust than the standard. Have checked several times at peak charging and is cool to the touch. Tesla has been happy with the temperature as well for over a month.

Built well and have no hot spots that I can find or measure. After hearing about fires started in garages because people used range/stove plugs for their EV charging units, I had this replace the Home Depot 50A range plug for piece of mind. Just keyin mind the faceplate template must be for these also because the EV plug diameter is slightly larger than a standard range outlet faceplate.

Used it for an EV installation and everything works fine. Using 8AWG wire in a normal 2 gang box is a little tight with this outlet. The wires come in from the sides so it’s hard to bend them and still push the outlet back into the box. Using a 2 gang box (per the instructions) might be a problem for some people. If you are replacing a traditional square box outlet this won’t fit. Make sure to download the installation instructions from the Leviton site first and make sure you have understood the right box dimensions you need. I was doing a new install so it was no problem.

Also it’s important to follow the tightening instructions and to use a torque screwdriver or wrench to make sure the wires are set right.

First one I got was defective – one terminal would not tighten. Returned it and get another one – for some reason it also was cheaper. Second time it all worked as it should. I used Leviton SL701 wall plate, it fits well. One thought about the 75 pound inch of torque it suppose to be tightened to… I think it is very close to the breaking point of the whole thing. The plastic is flexing quite a bit. In any case it did not break. The breaker terminal is suppose to be tightened to only 28 pound inch for 6 gauge wire to compare.
